Automatic Dialogue Replacement
ADR is a technique for replacing or recording the sound that was not able to be recorded on the set. For example, if you are doing a scene in a noisy factory, and the sound you record is full of "Factory Noise" you need to replace the bad sound you recorded on set, with dialogue you recorded in our studio. OR if you actor is busy hanging off the side of a building when he is saying his lines, and getting good sound is kind of hard, you can add it in at K&R.

How Is This Done??
Well as far as I know there is no plug in for your PC. The way the pros do it; There is a system that places a edit point at the beginning of the line of dialogue. Then the actor gets to watch the scene "as it was recorded " a few times to watch His/Her lips. Then the scene gets played again, this time three sec. before the line is to begin the actor hears three beeps in their head-set as sort of a Count down, on the last beep they say the line. If it looks good. they move on to the next line of dialogue, if not , they do it again, and again.

Some times whole scenes with pages of dialogue are done in this fashion. If you want to see it being done I found this amazing student video that shows a class doing it.

Pricing
Finish prices vary for this type of work. Usually I like to quote the entire job. This is because there is more to doing a complete sound track than just the dialog. There is the clothes and stepping and specifics in the sound track that need to be corrected and or added. How about mood music too. I like to be the audio engineer throughout the entire project so that I can use some tricks and specialized equipment to get most of the dialogue at the first filming. That reduces the time in the ADR studio, and actors time for a great savings.

Lets talk about a great finish to your film.
Now for the Technical Information

The goal of K&R's Post Production Studio is to produce a realistic film/television soundtrack that is bigger than life yet filled with subtle nuances. The Foley Artists, Sound FX Editors, Dialog Editors, Music Editors and Mixers can work closely together, sometimes producing hundreds of separate tracks, to create a unique Sound Design for each film. We have some pretty nice new equipment that compliments the vintage stuff, that is just like the big guys have in Holly Wood. So, I would like to share it with you.

Our picture runs from within ProTools with a Video Card projected on multiple large screens. Picture files should be Quick Time Motion JPG A files at 320x240 pixels. 640x480 will do as well. 16x9 in a 4x3 is OK. Anything over 500 MB should be delivered to K&R on DVD or on a Windows XP compatible Hard Drive. (That's a total size, not per reel). Smaller picture files can be sent via our special KNR ftp site if necessary but we would prefer all picture files to be sent on DVD as data files.

The Running Time Code should be largely visible preferably at the top of the screen, on the edge of or out of the frame of picture. We can read VITC too and can develop our own TC that will sync with your TC. Guide tracks can either be included within the QuickTime picture file or sent separately. If sent separately please insure the presence of a corresponding time code and please observe the 500 MB rule above.

K&R requires an EDL in any CMX format for each reel of picture. The time code in the EDLs should match the ProTools Session time code. K&R uses the EDLs to generate wipes as part of the cueing system. Please specify your ProTools session specs:
Session Start Time, Audio File Type (.wav, aif), Sample rate (48K, 44.1K), Bitrate (24, 16), Time Code Rate (23.976, 24,25,29.97 Non-Drop, 29.97 Drop 30, 30 Drop), Feet + Frame Rate (23.976 FPS, 24 FPS,25 FPS), Audio Frame rate, drop/non-drop/pull down, Video Frame Rate, drop/non-drop/pull down. A snapshot of your extended ProTools session setup window works like a charm.

If sending Foley notes or cue sheets (preferably) please send the notes when you send the picture and guide elements. Foley notes can be cued via ProTools session or in PDF format, however we would prefer the notes written as a text (*.txt) document including the In and Out time-codes or footage of the specific effect to cover.

All completed Foley sessions are delivered as ProTools Sessions. Completed Foley sessions can be delivered via our ftp site or on CD or DVD. If using your ftp site please supply us with your ftp site information or speak to someone at K&R to make suitable arrangements.
